Invented in 1986 by South Korean food company Nongshim, Shin Ramyun has been exported to over 100 countries with over 28 billion units sold, clinching the title of the best-selling instant noodle brand in South Korea. Well-known for its signature spicy flavour, the word ‘Shin Ramyun’ or Ramyun literally translates to spicy instant noodles.

People all around the world are familiar with Shin Ramyun’s cabbage and beef stew flavour, inspired by a popular traditional South Korean dish, Sogogijanguk. Now, Shin Ramyun is available in 2 flavours – original and Shin Ramyun Black which features an additional packet of beef stock soup and a more intense flavour of red pepper, garlic and green onion.

Rose Shin Ramyun

What you’ll need:

  • 1 packet of Shin Ramyun
  • 500ml of milk
  • ½ Tablespoon of Gochujang
  • ½ Onion, sliced
  • Cocktail Sausages
  • Sliced Cheese

How to prepare:

  1. Add the milk to a large pan and mix in the gochujang.
  2. Once you’ve mixed the gochujang into the milk, bring it to a boil.
  3. Add the noodles, dried flakes, packet seasoning, onions, and sausages into the pan.
  4. Mix and make sure the noodles are cooked
  5. Add in sliced cheese for a creamier taste, mix and serve. You can top it off with some parmesan cheese as well.

 

Chilli Oil Shin Ramyun

What you’ll need:

Neutral oil refers to a type of cooking oil that has a very mild or no distinct taste. This makes it versatile for a variety of culinary applications since it doesn't influence or mask the flavors of the ingredients being cooked. Common neutral oils include canola oil, sunflower oil, vegetable oil, safflower oil and grapeseed oil.

Additional ingredients, adjusted to your preference:

  • Minced garlic
  • Green onion: Diced, white and green part separated.
  • Sugar
  • Chili flakes
  • Light soy sauce
  • Rice vinegar
  • Sesame oil
  • An Egg (optional)

How to prepare:

  1. Boil the noodles according to packet instructions with the dried vegetables. Reserve the spice packet for later. Drain the noodles and set aside.
  2. In a bowl, add half of the seasoning packet, minced garlic, the white parts of the green onion, sugar and chili flakes.
  3. Heat up 3 tbsp of neutral oil over high heat until it starts to smoke (1 minute), turn off heat and immediately pour the oil into the bowl. Mix it well then add the cooked noodles, rice vinegar and the rest of the green onions. Mix the noodles until well combined.
  4. Heat up a frying pan over medium high heat with the remaining oil. Once the oil is hot enough (15 to 30 seconds), gently break an egg and let it cook until the edges turn golden and crispy and the yolk has reached your preferred doneness. Serve with the noodles and enjoy!

 

Spicy Mayo Korean Ramen (Vegan-Friendly)

What you’ll need:

  • 1 packet Shin Ramyun
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp vegan mayo
  • 1/2 cup oat milk
  • noodle water

For garnishing

  • spring onions
  • toasted sesame seeds
  • roasted nori flakes

How to prepare:

  1. Cook the instant ramen noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain the noodles and save some noodle water.
  2. Add the seasoning, garlic powder, vegan mayo into a bowl. Add some noodle water and mix. Add in your oat milk and mix well with chopsticks.
  3. Add the noodles back in and mix well. Garnish with toasted sesame seeds, spring onions and nori flakes.
  4. For a protein source, you could add some tofu or tempeh!
